What is CDN?
A Content Delivery Network or Content Distribution Network (CDN) is a globally distributed network of proxy servers deployed in multiple data centers. The goal of a CDN is to serve content to end-users with high availability and high performance. CDNs serve a large fraction of the Internet content today, including web objects (text, graphics and scripts), downloadable objects (media files, software and documents), applications (e-commerce, portals), live streaming media, on-demand streaming media, and social networks.
Nowadays the Internet allows users around the world to get content from the other side of the world. The content packets are transmitted to the end user through a series of nodes and public network cables. Thus the latency can be affected by the transit distance. To reach web performance optimization, CDN is one of the best solutions. CDNs place servers around the world and server the users with date from the closest or most appropriate CDN nodes, depending on end users’ location. Therefore, it can reduce a number of nodes effectively when processing requests. This equates to network latency reduction and transmission speed improvement.
